In Portugal, residential structures for older people (ERPI) and care homes for the elderly house vulnerable people who need continuous care. To keep them safe, these facilities rely on aides trained in first aid and resuscitation.

The first-aid requirement

Basic life support (SBV-DAE, a 7-hour hands-on session on cardiac arrest and the defibrillator) is embedded in geriatric-aide training and is increasingly required at hiring by residential facilities, so that staff can intervene immediately in an emergency.

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and basic-life-support certificate is the way to meet this requirement; it is in addition to the staff's occupational training and must be renewed periodically.
